I love small businesses and their owners. Why? As a small business owner, you have to REALLY love what you do. I love listening to the owner's why... Why they love something so much that they want to make it a full time job. Why they want to bring their service or product to the community because they feel so strongly about it.
Listening to Grass & Root Juice Co.'s owner Sara talk about her why was fascinating. Sara's dream was to open Seattle's first juice truck serving freshly pressed, healthy juices featuring the best local produce. She started juicing herself three years ago, combining fruits and vegetables together into tasty, healthy concoctions. her co-workers caught on to her talent and began requesting her juices. She wrote up a menu, and began making larger quantities out of her Seattle apartment.
In late 2014, an opportunity arose in the form of Seattle's own version of Shark Tank. The Lion's Den is a way for entrepreneurs to receive guidance and help from local, successful entrepreneurs like Tom Douglas. After submitting a one minute video and business plan, Sara received word that she would be presenting along with five other small businesses at the Lion's Den. After a stellar presentation, Sara was given 48 hours to choose between two investors that had offered to help her. In May of 2015, the agreement was signed and Sara was on her way to getting her truck and other necessary items to work towards getting Seattle's first juice truck on the road.
After a few setbacks and bumps in the road, Sara finally got her truck built out, found a commissary kitchen, and all county permits checked off. She's set to go live in Seattle tomorrow at 7AM at 2404 7th Ave, Seattle, WA 98121.
Her juice offerings display her Seattle roots with juice names like Beetsmode and Green Team (which I LOOOOVE). Everything is fresh made and uses the best organic produce the area has to offer. I got to watch Sara work her magic and make the vibrant Roaring Orange (Carrot, Orange, Persimmon, Ginger, and Turmeric). I was present for a soft opening for her truck and let me tell you, not a single person (even the kids!) made a face at at the vegetable and fruit juices.
Sara, I loved hearing about your passion and I want nothing more than for you to kill it selling juice in your first week. You're an amazing business lady, and I'm proud to have been able to tell your story. Thank you for letting me be a part of your afternoon!
