Epiphany... And some thoughts.

January 4, 2017

By now you might have stopped by my website for one reason or another and may have already seen what I'm about to tell you. Well dear reader, even if you've seen it, there's more.

A few months ago, I was sitting in my office working on some report, and suddenly it hit me like a ton of bricks. What's "it" you ask? My tagline. Now I know a tagline probably isn't a HUGE deal to most of you, but it was for me. I finally had a direction! No more listlessly telling people that I was a photographer and hoping they "got it". To me, trying to explain that your everyday is beautiful and special wasn't working. It didn't fit me, and I didn't think I was getting through to people. Which is why the tagline felt so great. It felt like me, and it felt like what I was trying to accomplish with my images. I wouldn't call it a re-brand so much as a retooling of my current brand.

(Are you ready to actually see the tagline? Tired of me just rambling so far?)

Find the epic in your everyday.

Are you hearing fanfare, horns, angels singing? No? I still do, every time I say it to myself. It makes me a little giddy if I'm being honest.

What does it mean for you though? How will I approach your session, and what does that tagline have to do with it? Let's take a quick look at the word "epic". Epic has a few different meanings, and in my tagline it takes on two of those meanings. In simple terms, epic can mean story and in slang terms it can mean awesome or amazing. The whole goal of my session is to tell your story, and through those images, show you the amazing in your every day. Because let's face it, when you're in the thick of it day in and day out, you're probably not thinking about how incredible your life truly is. So that's what my job is... To find the epic in your every day. And when our session is said and done, you'll be able to see it too.

Finding your story is important too. Awhile back, I was talking with a co-worker who was talking about school pictures. She said to me, "I get the smallest package because they're just head shots."  For some reason that stuck with me... Just head shots.  What can you tell about a child, let alone anyone, from head shots?  That they have a nice smile?  That they have the unfortunate after recess time slot for pictures?  Maybe who their favorite character was (that is if their mom isn't like my mom and made them wear something plain) at that moment?  You might be able to get some inkling into their personality, but you won't know their story. If you're anything like me, you have your favorite books and stories, but can you remember ALL your favorite parts of those books and stories? Sentences, quotes, full chapters that may escape you as time marches on. I don't want you to forget those favorites.

I want you to be able to keep all of those moments close to your heart, just by looking at your images. I want to help you find your story, and then show it to you in images.

I can almost hear you thinking right now that your story is boring, or some other adjective for bland. I used to think that too. Up until a year ago, I would have told you the same about my life.  And minute to minute, I'd probably still say it.  But for some reason, the images I take of my family aren't boring. They stop time.  In these images I'll always have Declan's toddler grin, and the look Austin gets when Declan says something completely zany, sometimes I even have the monkey-like toddler hug that Declan gives me spontaneously. Things that when viewed in the grand scheme of a day don't seem like much, but within that image are everything.

This is my epic.  Let's find yours.
