Tacoma Family Photographer | What to Wear for a Documentary Session

February 4, 2019

I see these posts all the time... "What to wear for your family session!" with matching, put together outfits that are gorgeous. Rich, vibrant, stripes, spots... You name it, there's a outfit combo out there to fit your needs. Don't get me wrong, there are days that I wish my family could look more put together. And there are days where we do clean up pretty nice (let me tell you though, those are FEW and FAR in between, haha!). Most of the time though? We all pick our own outfits, and some of us (my husband) are a lot better at it than others (Declan and I).  Worrying about what to wear for a family photo session is literally one of the most stressful things in the WORLD for me.  I mean, what if we can't all find the same shade of cerulean?? Or what if I can't find Declan pants in the right color to make the outfit pull together? What if Declan decides today is the day he'd rather eat a pound of broccoli than wear jeans?

I mean, the friend eggs are pretty... But they're still fried.

What if it didn't have to be that way though? What if we DIDN'T have to stress about who was wearing what  (for those of us who do anyway, I know some folks LOVE it) and how to keep it clean?

Enter documentary family sessions.

Your kid wearing the same Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle shirt and pajama pants for the third day straight? So what? You have a favorite pair of jeans and a sweatshirt? Great, wear it... You're comfortable. In my experience, comfortable clothes = comfortable pictures.  No stiff poses, no itchy tags, no wondering if your dress is going to fly up and expose everyone to your "it's time to do laundry" knickers (oh, that's just me?). It's pretty freeing NOT worrying about your clothes and just focusing on being yourselves. Focus on who's winning the epic game of Sorry, or who has the best air guitar, or who can swing the highest... Because I promise, once you have those pictures, you won't even notice the outfits.

My advice? Wear whatever... I definitely won't judge. In fact, I'll probably give you a solidarity high five.
